Sustainability is the current buzzword. The construction and property sector has a major influence on reductions in energy and resource consumption and how these are managed.
The European Construction Products Regulation has been in force to advance this ambitious project since 2011. It regulates the recycling and use of sustainable raw materials. There are recognised certification systems for this, which evaluate buildings by their sustainability.
The American certification system LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is in widespread use internationally. Also BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method). In Germany there is the German Sustainable Building Certificate developed by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). There are a variety of other certification systems throughout the world. All of them are focused on the environment and sustainability.
The declaration of construction products by means of an EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) is an important part in the evaluation process. It serves as evidence of compliance with the Construction Products Regulation. Its data then acts as the basis for building certification.
Product information must be produced across the entire life cycle in order to obtain an EPD. This is classified into manufacture, use, dismantling and recycling.
Our product is a semi-finished product. It must be further processed before being used in a building, into insulation glazing for example. We can therefore only provide partial certification as a supplier of semi-finished products.
We can prove that we obtain our raw materials from local suppliers. Only sustainable substances are used in the manufacture of glass (REACH confirmation). The mixture of sand, lime and sodium carbonate is also offset using cullets. Our product is therefore fully recyclable (use of recycled material). The unique properties of our end product make it suitable for use with food.
